Working towards our goals
Where are we on each of our journeys? This is the question I posed to our students at this week’s assembly. Pope Francis reminds us that Jesus wants us to achieve great things in life and never disparages our expectations (Vatican News, 2023). Again, Pope Francis reminds us that we should all strive to be team players, never alone and engage wholeheartedly with the church and our community (Vatican News, 2023). La Salle Academy is a conduit of our faith, our church and our community – full engagement and the strengthening of trust in our relationship with and between our school, our peers and our families will help our students achieve to their full potential.
And whilst this community can positively influence the direction of our students, our students also need to understand and value the importance of self direction, discipline and resilience. More often than not, we are focused on the end product, the outcomes or the desired goals without reflecting on the significance of how we get there and who helps us. My assembly speech asked the students to consider their goals as a staircase. We need to take smaller steps to be able to achieve our bigger goals. Do our students know where they are on their own staircase? Are they aware of what is holding them back from taking the next step? Are they even aware of the steps required to achieve their goal? These are all good questions that parents/guardians can use to generate some discussion with their child that will assist them in planning, preparing and ultimately succeeding in life. If students are unable to navigate their own staircase, or are struggling to access their next short term goal, or are not confident in which steps they need to take, then we at La Salle Academy are ready. We as a community (school, parents/guardians, peers), are a community of faith, one that starts with giving freely, with enthusiasm and generosity, overcoming our fears and stepping forward! (Pope Francis, Vatican News, 2023).
As we enter Week three of semester two, two years levels have significant events occurring that can impact upon their goals and future outcomes. Year 10 students will formally start the process of deciding whether they will continue their schooling into Stage 6 whilst our Year 12 students will be starting their Trial examinations that work towards their finals marks for their HSC. Both of these events will challenge our students to identify the steps that they need to take. If at any time, these students are struggling, we are there to help, guide and assist them. But equally, it is incumbent on us all to promote the drive, dedication and passion within these students that creates the confident independent young people we wish to see. I ask that we keep all of our students in your prayers over the coming weeks, but especially our Year 10 & 12 students who are engaging in these important educational activities in the next few weeks.
God Bless

Prayer for our Year 12 students.
As a community we keep our Year 12 students warmly in our thoughts and prayers as they are about to start their Trial Examinations. Our prayer and wish is for all of their efforts to be richly rewarded in producing their best over the next two weeks.
God we ask that our students feel your closeness during the Trial examination period. Give them calm hearts and quiet confidence in the knowledge that you hold them in the palm of your hand. Bless them with keen understanding and retentive memory. Give them the ability to grasp things correctly, be exact in their explanations and an ability to express themselves clearly. Point out clearly the beginning, direct their progress and help them in the completion of each of their responses. Holy Spirit send them your gifts of wisdom and knowledge.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

World Youth Day 2023
26 to 31 July 2023
Lisbon, Portugal
World Youth Day (WYD) is the gathering of young people from all over the world with the Pope. It is also a pilgrimage, a celebration of youth, an expression of the universal Church and an intense moment of evangelization for the youth world. Although its Catholic identity is clearly evident, WYD opens its doors to everyone, no matter how close to or distant from the Church they are. It is celebrated at the diocesan level on the Feast of Christ the King, and every two, three or four years as an international gathering in a city chosen by the Pope, with the presence of the Holy Father. It brings together millions of young people to celebrate their faith and sense of belonging to the Church. It is a new stimulus to the faith, hope and charity of the entire host country community. With young people as its protagonists, World Youth Day also seeks to promote peace, unity and fraternity among peoples and nations around the world.

Year 10-12 Pastoral Care Co-ordinator
The first two weeks of Term 3 have been busy with opportunities for students to display
their talents, both academically and on the sporting field. Congratulations to those students
who attended the Athletics Carnival in near freezing conditions and showed great
participation. Perhaps, that was the only way to keep warm.
For Year 12, their final school athletic carnival enabled them to have fun together and build
up their camaraderie. They did a wonderful job on the BBQ and canteen, keeping the
attendees well-fed and nourished. Thanks to Mrs Leanne Case, our Canteen Manager who
assisted in the canteen all day.
It was pleasing to see so many parents attending the Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday
evening in the hall. Communication between the school and parents and carers is essential
to ensure we work together for the benefit of the students.
Being the final term for Year 12, here are a lot of “final” events for them. They commence
their Trial HSC Examinations next Monday and have received information on the
requirements regarding attendance/inability to attend, punctuality, the need for a good
breakfast and adequate sleep.
Year 12’s major fundraiser for the term is the Krispy Kreme Donut Drive. Thanks to all who
placed orders. Donuts will be available for collection at a date later in August and you will be
advised of the collection details closer to the day.
The format for their Graduation ceremonies has changed slightly. A Graduation Mass will be
celebrated with families and staff, followed by a dinner at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club. The
following morning a whole school assembly will occur, enabling the student body to give
Year 12 a proper farewell. Details on this will be forthcoming. The students will still have a
Graduation Formal in November at the Crib Room Restaurant in Wallerawang.
The Student Leadership Selection Process will commence over the next few weeks for Year
11. I would encourage all students to seriously consider self-nominating for a leadership
position.
Year 10 have returned to school full of stories of their recent Work Experience placements.
The feedback from employers has been very positive. For some students, they are more
committed than ever to following certain career paths, having been exposed to various
aspects of jobs. For others, they now know which jobs they do not want to find out more
about.
On next Thursday night, 3 rd August, parents of Year 10 are reminded of the information
session in the hall regarding the future pathways program at La Salle Academy. Mr
Carpenter will detail his plans and hopes for developing an educational environment that
caters for students considering different pathways.
On Saturday, 9 th September, Mr Carpenter and I will be accompanying a busload of
interested students to the Sydney Careers and Employment Expo at the Hordern Pavilion at
Moore Park. This opportunity is open to students of Years 10 to 12. More information will
be shared with them and parents next week.
Please keep Year 12 in your prayers for the upcoming two weeks while they are in exam
mode. Year 11 will be sitting their Preliminary exams at the end of Term.
If you have any concerns about your son or daughter in Year 10, 11 or 12, please do not
hesitate to contact me on b.hicks@bth.catholic.edu.au or on 63545100.

Year 7-9 Pastoral Care Co-ordinator

Welcome back to school for Term 3! I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break.
As we begin this term, let us reflect on the importance of inner pride. We encourage all students to approach their learning with a positive mindset and take pride in their achievements, no matter how big or small. Remember, it is the journey of growth that matters, and every step forward should be celebrated!
With the commencement of Term 3, assessments and studying will be at the forefront of our focus. As students, it is crucial to maintain a balanced approach to your academic responsibilities.
Seek support from your teachers, practise effective time management, and make use of various study techniques. Remember, assessments are not just about grades but an opportunity to showcase your knowledge and skills.
Our recent Parent-Teacher Night was a fantastic opportunity for parents to engage with teachers and gain insights into their child's progress. It was lovely to see so many parents and students participate. We as a school certainly appreciate your commitment to your child's education and believe that together, we can create a nurturing and supportive learning environment.
As you are probably aware, we have implemented a change in Years 7-9 base classes this term. Our aim is to enhance focus, engagement, and provide opportunities to meet new friends. We hope this change will have a positive impact on the overall learning experience for all students.
Lastly, congratulations to all our Achievement Award recipients at yesterday's Whole School Assembly. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment have not gone unnoticed. We are extremely proud of your achievements, and we encourage all students to strive for excellence in all areas of their school life. Remember, success is the result of perseverance, determination, and a strong belief in your abilities.
