Fanning the flames of hope
Welcome back to a new school year! Pope Francis declared that 2025 was a Jubilee year with a theme of ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. Hope that we can discover, connect, embrace and strengthen our love for the messages given to us by Jesus Christ. Messages that build love, empathy, equity and justice in an ever complex world so that we can work for the common good of all. At La Salle Academy, we proudly join our catholic communities around the world to ‘fan these flames of hope’ in our students and by extension to our families and community to ensure that we create global citizens who are respectful, responsible and tolerant.
Thank you to our community for your attendance at our beautiful Opening mass, a moment where we witnessed the blessing of new seniors, student leaders and those newest members of our school community. I challenged our students at this mass to work for their hopes, they do not just happen. I asked our community, what is it that we hope for? For each individual, this may be different, but what are we prepared to do to work towards this hope. That is a challenge that I have set for all students.
As a school, our hope is to strengthen our student learning, hence our 2025 focus of ‘Learning’. I hope that our students are communicating changes that they are seeing in their classrooms including new diaries, new classes, new ‘student engagement’ focus, a focus on learning intentions and success criteria. As a school we are working together and with effort to realise our hope of improving our student outcomes.
Homework / Study Club
One initiative that is designed to assist our students with realising their potential, is the Homework/Study Centre that will be open from Week Four (Week Beginning, Monday 24th February) from 3.30pm-6.00pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings. We are providing a quiet and supported space with WIFI for students to ensure that they can focus on their work without distraction. It is hoped that our families will support this venture and encourage their children to avail of this service.
Year 7 Family BBQ
On Tuesday 4th March, we will be welcoming our Year 7 families to the school to meet with teachers and other families. The school will provide a BBQ for all families as we look to welcome you all into our Lasallian Lithgow community.
Year 6 Taster Day
On Friday 7th March, La Salle Academy will be welcoming Year 6 students from around our district to join our school for a taste of high school. If you know of anyone that might be interested in attending, please contact our office. Student currently in catholic primary schools will receive this information in their classes.
Open Evening
Also on Friday 7th March, we will be opening the doors to the school and inviting members from the Lithgow community to come and see La Salle Academy. Take a tour of the school from 5.00pm. I will make a presentation at 6.00pm about the mission and future directions of the school followed by a BBQ for the entire family – please come up and join us from 5.00pm-7.00pm.
We have got off to a great start at La Salle Academy. We are excited to have our students on campus again (even if they might not be as excited as us!). We continue to strive towards building character within our students, developing global citizens who know right from wrong. We are an inclusive school where all students are treated equally and with a focus on creating future leaders that will have a lasting and positive impact on our community. We look forward to ‘fanning the flames of hope’ throughout our school for 2025.
God Bless
Mr Glenn Carpenter

A Strong Start
We have had a fantastic first few weeks of school! Our students have returned with
enthusiasm, ready to learn and grow. Teachers have been working hard to establish strong

to see visual reminders of our expectations in classrooms in the coming weeks.
This year, we are reinforcing our commitment to learning, respect, and responsibility. Please
take a moment to review school policies and expectations with your child to help them stay
on track for success. We are also continuing to provide additional academic support to ensure

Leader of Teaching and Learning
Welcome to a brand-new school year!
We are thrilled to have our students and parents join us for another exciting journey of learning, growth, and discovery. This year promises to be filled with new challenges, opportunities, and achievements as we work together to create a supportive and inspiring learning environment at La Salle Academy.
In addition to my role as the Teacher Librarian, I am also undertaking the role of Leader of Teaching and Learning. This role is primarily focused on improving the quality and impact of teaching and learning at La Salle Academy. Through working collaboratively with staff to ensure their experience and expertise is being utilised effectively and their understanding of how students learn is maximised through the implementation of contemporary pedagogy, we are aiming to develop best practise to maximise student outcomes in 2025.
The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) highlights the importance of leading teaching and learning through the identification of positive outcomes such as:
- Focuses primarily on improving teaching quality to have the greatest impact on student outcomes.
- Improves the progress and achievement of students.
- Supports active engagement and strong student voice.
- Encourages a culture of professional learning and growth.
- Promotes collaborative planning, review and evaluation.
- Enables participation in both formal and informal teacher learning and development
Our Strategic Improvement Plan identifies the overarching mission of La Salle Academy is to provide direction to students, empowering them to reach their full potential, pursue their aspirations and thrive as confident global citizens committed to upholding integrity and justice for all. La Salle Academy is committed to creating a learning environment where all members of the community feel valued, supported, inspired and equipped to make positive change in the world. We grow from our challenges and celebrate our achievements and empower students to aim for excellence in their academic and personal endeavours.
As our staff work to ensure that they are addressing the learning needs of each student, your enthusiasm, dedication, and partnership are also essential to making this year a success, and we can’t wait to see all that we will accomplish together. Here’s to a fantastic start to the school year!
Yours in learning,
Mrs Devine
Religious Education Coordinator

As we begin another beautiful year at La Salle Academy, I am once again excited to extend a warm welcome to all students, families, and staff. Our school community continues to buzz with energy as we embark on a journey filled with growth, learning, and spiritual enrichment in this special Jubilee Year: Pilgrims of Hope 2025.
We began the year with all staff attending our annual Commissioning Mass alongside St Patrick’s, Lithgow and St Joseph’s, Portland on Friday, 31st January. We thank Father Reynold for such an inspiring Homily. We all play a vital role in sowing the seeds of faith and learning in our students, helping them grow and flourish.
Our Opening Mass was held on Friday, 7th February at St Patrick’s Church. It was a beautiful occasion, shared with special guests, parents, family members, and our parish community, marking the beginning of our faith-filled journey for the year ahead.
This year, we are thrilled to welcome Harry Pottinger and Imogen Della Bosca as our new Youth Ministers for 2025. Their passion for faith and service will be a wonderful asset to our school community. Additionally, we congratulate Amira Kathir and Ally Crane on their appointment as our 2025 Mission Leaders. We look forward to seeing their leadership in action throughout the year.
Term 1 also sees our focus shift towards Project Compassion, Caritas Australia’s annual appeal supporting communities in need. Our school will be actively involved in raising funds through donations, fundraising events and recycling initiatives, including our annual St Valentine’s Day Stall on 14th February, Shrove Tuesdays Pancake Party on February 13th, Easter Egg Raffle and BBQ Lunch. Proceeds from these events will go towards Project Compassion, encouraging us all to put our faith into action through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We are well on the way with over $200 being raised so far. Our goal this year is to raise $3000, which is 1 toilet for a Samoa family.
We encourage families to support our Project Compassion Appeal, with our goal of raising $3,000. Donations can be made online via the Caritas Australia website or by scanning the QR code below: https://schools.projectcompassion.org.au/o/la-salle-academy-lithgow
For those who would like to contribute further, we have a few spare Project Compassion boxes available for families to take home. If you wish to collect one, please reach out, we greatly appreciate your generosity and support in making a difference!
On Ash Wednesday, 4th March, we will gather as a school for a solemn liturgy, marking the beginning of Lent. This is a time of reflection, renewal, and preparation for Easter.
Attending Mass is an essential part of nurturing our faith and deepening our connection with God and one another. It is a time for prayer, reflection, and community, strengthening us in our journey as Pilgrims of Hope. We encourage all students and families to make Mass a regular part of their lives. We hope to see you there as we grow together in faith and fellowship.

Youth Minister

My name is Harry Pottinger, and I am one of our two Youth Ministers for 2025. I am thrilled to be working alongside Imogen Della Bosca this year. Together, we are excited to share our experiences and make a positive impact on the school community.
I have a passion for creativity and enjoy crafting in my free time, as well as staying active through swimming, surfing and baking. I also love the simple joy of having tea (or 100) and taking moments to relax.
This year, my goal is to contribute as much as possible to different schools, gaining valuable experience and making a meaningful difference.
Looking ahead, I aspire to become a teacher and an SLSO (School Learning Support Officer), dedicating my career to helping students learn and grow.
My name is Imogen Della Bosca, and I am honoured to be one of La Salle Academy’s Youth Ministers for 2025. I was fortunate to hold this role last year and am thrilled to continue in 2025 alongside Harry Pottinger. My passion for working at La Salle grows stronger each year, and I look forward to the many opportunities we have to engage and support our students. This year is particularly exciting as I also begin my University journey at CSU Bathurst, studying a Bachelor of Education. It has been a busy start to the term, highlighted by our Opening Mass, a beautiful and meaningful celebration that brought our school community together to begin the year in faith and unity.
Have a great week!
Harry and Imogen

Mission Leaders of La Salle Academy
Happy Friday to all our staff, students and family members at LSA!
Over the Christmas break, the 2025 leadership team attended a 5-day LaSallian students leadership retreat and seminar. Throughout the duration of this event, we were able to interact with students from La Sallian schools all around Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Lifelong friendships were made, and we were blessed with the knowledge and insight of many youth ministers and previous Lasallian Captains. We were also able to experience the differing cultures of other students and were inspired to see their dedication to faith and culture. After this moving experience, your La Salle leadership team has come up with many ideas for fundraisers and social events to unite our school further and raise our contributions to the greater community.
Have a great weekend!
Ally Crane and Amira Kathir.
2025 Mission Captains

Pastoral and Wellbeing Co-ordinator Year 7,9 and 11

Welcome back to school for 2025!
My name is Tahni Hotham (previously Isedale) and I will be the Wellbeing Coordinator for years 7, 9 and 11 this year. I am looking forward to getting to know the students and families of year 7 and continuing my work with students and families in years 9 and 11.
The Resilience Project
All students in years 7-12 will be participating in The Resilience Project Wellbeing Program this year. The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical wellbeing strategies to build resilience. This fortnight our focus has been on ‘happy tricks’ and developing our own happy tricks for when our mood is low. Dinner table conversation this week can be discussing what happy tricks your child and their friends identified in their TRP lesson.
Year 7
A warm welcome to our Year 7 cohort for 2025. After a couple of orientation and administration days last week, Year 7 students are now looking very confident here on campus, getting to know their way around the school, how to read their timetables and making new friends! I am hearing wonderful things from staff about the fantastic manner in which year 7 have started their high school journey, so please congratulate them.
We have Year 7 Camp coming up in week 4. Please ensure you have returned the permission note and completed the online medical and consent form which has been emailed to you. The lead up to camp can produce some feelings of anxiety with some students. Please do not hesitate to reach out if this is your child, my role is to ensure all students are feeling comfortable and confident to attend camp.
Year 9
As Year 9 students begin the school year, they are embarking on an exciting journey as they start their elective subjects. This marks an important step in their education, allowing them to explore areas of interest and develop new skills. Alongside this, I want to highlight the importance of regular school attendance. Consistent attendance is key to success, as missing lessons can disrupt learning and make it difficult to catch up. I note a number of students in year 9 have already had one or more days absent, alongside partial day absences. I encourage parents to ensure all appointments are scheduled outside of school hours where possible. All students should be aiming to have 85% attendance or higher to ensure they are fully engaged in both their core and elective subjects for a productive and rewarding year.
Year 11
As Year 11 students begin the new academic year, they are entering a critical phase in their education. The workload will increase significantly, with more challenging assignments and homework designed to help prepare them for their exams. Please do not hesitate to reach out if your child is struggling with the increased load.
I have already discussed the importance of regular attendance with the cohort, emphasizing how crucial it is for their success. Missing even a few lessons can have a considerable impact on their learning, especially as the year progresses. I encourage parents to support their child in attending school regularly and being punctual, ensuring they are fully prepared for this important year ahead.
Mrs Tahni Hotham
Wellbeing Coordinator (Years 7, 9 & 11)
Pastoral and Wellbeing Co-ordinator Year 8 and 10

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2025 schooling year.
My name is Soliette Markovic and I am the Wellbeing Coordinator for Years 8 and 10 for 2025. I am excited to be stepping into this role and working closely with the students and families at La Salle Academy. A little about me: I have been a teacher at La Salle Academy for just over a year, having previously worked in schools within the Macarthur area. My goal this year is to support the students in a more collaborative manner, helping them feel confident in all areas of their learning.
A warm welcome to Years 8 and 10 who returned back to school last Wednesday, 5th of
February. After a well deserved break, the students went straight back into their routine with
normal classes from period 2. Students were given their timetables, new diaries and were
excited to resume classes with their new classmates and teachers for the year. We have a
couple of new students and families joining us this year in Years 8 and 10. Students have
settled well and we have a community of students who have helped make this transition
easier for the new members of our school community.
This year, I invite students to look forward to the following as we head back:
● New experiences: I encourage students to get involved in as many events and extra-
curricular activities as possible. The more you put into your schooling experience, the
more you will get out of it. There’s always a chance to learn something new and
countless opportunities to grow academically, socially and mentally.
● Building relationships: Reconnecting with friends and teachers helps create a
supportive environment, one that fosters learning and a strong sense of community. I
believe that this makes a difference in the student’s success, making them feel
supported and confident as they step into the new year.
● Setting goals: Starting early and thinking about where you would like to be at the end
of the year will help set you up for success. I encourage students to start putting
goals in place now, to help them with their motivation throughout the year.
Charles Sturt University Explore Day
On Tuesday 11th of March Year 10 students will have the opportunity to attend the Charles Sturt
University Explore Day on their campus in Bathurst. Students will have had the
opportunity to choose from a range of workshops to participate in on the day, based on their
interests and possible future career. This will be an exciting day for the students, an
opportunity for them to have a glimpse of University life. I would like to extend a thank you to
the teachers and staff involved in preparing and attending the day, particularly Mr Carpenter,
Miss Hogan, Mr Makejev and Mrs Houghton.
It has been lovely to see students making their way to the Wellbeing Hub throughout the last
couple of days. I am always there to offer support, have a chat or to simply say hello. I am
looking forward to working with the parents and students here at La Salle Academy,
supporting the students of years 8 and 10, in order to help them feel safe and confident here
at school. Parents, please feel free to contact me at the school should any concerns about
your child’s wellbeing arise.

Library News

Welcome Back!
Welcome back to all of our staff and students. I hope the summer break was a wonderful time to rest and relax and spend time with friends and family. I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to our new students and their families and hope that your learning experience here at La Salle Academy is rewarding.
Premier’s Reading Challenge 2025
Once again, La Salle Academy will be entering the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2025. The aim of this challenge is to encourage a love of reading and to enable students to experience quality literature. All students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to participate. We had some great success with students completing the challenge last year and it would be wonderful to see those numbers increase this year. The challenge runs from Monday 24th February until Friday 22nd August. All interested students can sign up at the library. More information on the rules and tips for completing the challenge can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html
SORA
La Salle Academy is a member of the Australian Catholic Education Network, which enables our students to access the amazing digital library provided through the SORA platform. This online library provides access to a range of fiction and non-fiction ebooks and audio books as well as a range of magazines. This allows students to read even when they cannot access our physical library at school. Students can access SORA through https://soraapp.com/ and by using their CENET login. More details can be found through the La Salle Library Google Classroom page.
Library Displays
Throughout the year, the library creates displays to coincide with key events in the calendar. The first of these is Lunar New Year which is also known as the Spring Festival. It is a joyous occasion celebrated by millions around the world to mark the beginning of the lunar calendar. We have also created separate displays for Valentine’s Day and as a special welcome to our new students we have created a display using our archival material to showcase the history of La Salle Academy. Our displays aim to promote the elements of each celebration and showcase some of the literature and resource materials available in the library.
Overdue Reminder
Please ensure that any books that were borrowed for holiday reading are n9w returned to the library. Also, any outstanding textbooks, particularly from our senior students should be returned to the library as soon as possible.
Happy Reading,
Mrs Devine

Mowers Needed

La Salle Academy as part of our “Boys Education” program would like any working lawn mowers, or lawn mowers needing a little love and attention to bring them back to life.
These mowers will be cleaned up, repaired and painted if necessary and re-homed into our community.
Where possible it would help us greatly if they could be dropped off at the Academy.
These boys will increase their communication, numeracy and literacy skills by ordering, costing of the necessary parts and working in a team environment.
Thank you for supporting this program for our students.
