From the Principal

During Week Three, La Salle Academy will be completing our five-year review with Catholic Education, Diocese of Bathurst Ltd. I look forward to engaging with our external visitors during this review to showcase our journey over years, but also to gain insights and support for the strategic direction that we need to take to ensure continued growth, opportunity and success for our community. Over the past few weeks and months, we have collectively considered how we can accurately reflect on our journey, and these are reflected below as areas where I believe we have demonstrated development.
Safe & Structured Environment
We have made focused efforts in ensuring that we provide a school environment that is both safe and supportive for all students.
Creating Purposeful Learning Environments
In providing a safe and structured school, we have been able to re-orientate our focus to the teaching and learning within our classrooms to maximise our student outcomes.
Strengthen Administration & Communication
In developing more efficient administration processes and becoming more transparent in our communication, we have engaged more effectively with all stakeholders within our community.
Investment
We have invested in the education of our students by ensuring that they are appropriately resourced a physical environment that is more appealing and reflective of student’s educational needs.
Opportunities
We continue to engage in more and more opportunities, whilst trying to find an academic balance so that we can further engage and excite our students and open their minds to the possibilities beyond school.
Enhancing Reputation
With a focus on engaging and having a more purposeful voice within our community, improved advertising and more visibility, there has been an increase in exposure of our school throughout the community.
Whilst we can reflect on our many successes, it is important that we continue to keep one eye on our future and be strategic in our planning and goal setting. With this in mind, we have acknowledged some key priorities that we wish to continue improving at La Salle Academy.
Developing resilient, independent and aspirational young leaders
Engage with various resources, embrace every opportunity and open the minds of our students up to all possibilities. This will be a combined focus of our pastoral, curriculum and career teams to ensure that our students are confident in their schooling and future directions.
Continuing Academic Growth
After our successful NAPLAN results (with significant individual academic growth and averages above the national average) and structural curriculum changes in Stage 5 & 6, we look forward to celebrating further academic success in the years to come.
Strengthening Community Partnerships
Looking towards strengthening relationship with Businesses, Industries, Corporations and local governance to ensure that we position our curriculum and co-curricular opportunities to ensure successful transitions beyond school for our students.
Investment
A significant focus on continual improvement of facilities. Looking to establish a master plan that adequately addresses the needs of the students and the school.
Promote our Catholic Identity
Engaging our families more in school-based activities that are faith and mission orientated. Develop more of a connection between the church, the school and the home. Strengthening an understanding of why our Catholic identity creates the educational environment that exists at our school.
Whilst I am proud of the journey that we have been on so far, this is just the start. Even though our review process does reflect on what we have done, it is an opportune time to consider and be excited for what lies ahead.
God Bless
Mr Glenn Carpenter
Assistant Principal

Academic Awards
Congratulations to all our students for their academic achievements during Semester One. It was wonderful to see so many of our student receiving awards for their application and effort throughout Semester One at our recent awards ceremony. We were also fortunate that many parents and carers were able to attend school to see their child receive their awards.
Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations
Next week, our Year 12 students commence their Trial HSC Exams starting with English on Monday 4th August. Students have been emailed their own individual timetable and although students do not attend formal classes during this exam period when they don’t have exams, students still have access to the school library for study and exam preparation.
Please join me in wishing our students every success in these exams.
Year 11 End of Preliminary Examinations
Year 11 students will be commencing their End of Preliminary exams in weeks 8 and 9. A timetable will be distributed to students soon. This means that students should be completing final assessment tasks and preparing for the exams by revising course content and reviewing past papers to get used to the style of questions that will be used.
Parent Teacher Interviews for Year 8, 9 & 10 Students
Parents are reminded that there are two parent-teacher interview afternoons that you can choose from to make a booking to see your child's teachers. The first session is on Tuesday, 5th Augus,t and the second session is on Tuesday, 12th August. It's not too late to make a booking.
Have a great fortnight

Religious Education Coordinator

“Nothing is more useful than to look upon the world as it really is, and at the same time to strive for the better.” – Pope Leo XIII
This quote reminds us that while we are called to face the world’s realities, we are also called, especially in Catholic education, to be builders of hope, compassion, and change. Here at La Salle Academy, we strive to do exactly that: to nurture young hearts and minds so they can make the world a little more just, a little more kind, and a lot more faithful.
And this Term, there’s no shortage of opportunities to live out our Lasallian values of faith, service and community.
All staff began Term 3 with a reflective and engaging Staff Spirituality Day, where we were excited to hear from Paul Hughes and Lydia Legge on the history, spirituality and charism of St John Baptist de La Salle. Their words reminded us that teaching is not just a job, it’s a vocation, a calling to serve and walk alongside young people as they grow in wisdom and faith.
Celebrating Faith and Community
We begin with the upcoming Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop on Thursday, 8th August. This liturgy will be led by our Year 11 students in Studies in Catholic Thought, who have been reflecting deeply on Mary MacKillop’s unwavering commitment to the poor and education. Her legacy is deeply ingrained in our hearts, especially in a rural community like ours. Parents, parishioners and extended families are warmly invited to join us for this beautiful celebration.
Then, on Thursday, 15th August, we will join with St Patrick’s Primary School to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This Mass will take place at 9:30 am at St Patrick’s Church, a sacred reminder of the importance of collaboration between our Catholic schools and parishes.
Forming Hearts for Service and Leadership
On Monday, 19th August, our Year 5 students will take part in a Leadership Retreat Day, guided by our wonderful Youth Ministers and Year 9/10 CSYMI (Catholic Schools Youth Ministry International) students. It’s incredible to witness older students mentoring younger ones, not just teaching leadership, but modelling it.
In addition, our Year 4 Unity and Connection Retreat Day will be held on Monday, 2nd September, inviting students to explore how they are connected to others, to creation, and God.
Our Year 9 and 10 CSYMI students will also head to Blayney on 22nd August for the ‘Rise’ Youth Conference, a powerful day of prayer, worship, music and testimony alongside other Catholic high school students from across the Diocese. These moments are often life-changing.
Building Sacred Spaces
We're currently in the process of revamping our school Chapel, turning it into a welcoming, reflective space that will be used regularly for:
- Class liturgies and Friday morning prayer,
- Monthly penance sessions with Fr. Reynold, and
- A formation hub for our CSYMI student leaders.
This sacred space aims to be the heartbeat for our school’s spiritual life, a place where students can pause, reflect, and encounter God.
Walking with Our Sacramental Students
Several of our students who completed the Sacramental Program last year are now preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the coming weeks. This is a significant milestone in their journey of faith, and we invite our entire school community to keep them and their families in prayer during this special time. We especially acknowledge and extend our best wishes to Evie Whittaker and Ally McSorley as they prepare for Confirmation in the coming week. We also congratulate Arden Culter and Emily Highley, who have now completed all of their Catholic Sacraments, a wonderful achievement and testament to their commitment. Thank you again to Ms Jackie Tse, Father Reynold and Imogen Della Bosca for all their assistance and guidance in this space.
Encountering God Outside the Classroom
During the school holidays, five of our La Salle students attended the Ignite Youth Conference, a dynamic and spirit-filled experience of faith, music, and community. A huge thank you to Mrs Markovic, who gave her time, guidance and heart across the three days. I thank Ashlee Cooper for her beautiful reflection below.
Ignite Conference Reflection by Ashlee Cooper (Year 12) – 2025
During the school holidays, I had the opportunity to attend the Ignite Conference held at St Leo’s Catholic College in Sydney. I went with four other students, Lorissa, Isabelle, Glen, and Isabella, along with a staff member, Mrs Markovic. It was a four-day Catholic event that brought together people of all ages to encounter God in a powerful and real way.
We arrived on the first day around 5 pm and kicked things off with a high-energy rally session full of music, dancing, and connection. It was the perfect way to begin the experience, as it broke the ice and created a welcoming and joyful atmosphere. After that, we had dinner and returned to our hotel to rest up for the big days ahead. Day two began with a morning rally, followed by our first keynote session. These sessions were organised by year group and led by the incredible NET Ministries team from Auckland. Their energy, honesty, and faith were truly inspiring and had a big impact on all of us.
Throughout the day, we heard from a range of speakers who shared their personal journeys with Christ. Their stories were deeply moving and encouraged me to reflect more on my own relationship with God. Each day concluded with a night rally, a time of worship, prayer, and reflection that brought everything together beautifully.
One of the most powerful aspects of Ignite for me was the strong sense of community. Even though there were hundreds of people there, I felt completely welcomed and connected, even by those I had never met before. The kindness and unity among everyone were something I’ll never forget.
A personal highlight for me was having the privilege of speaking at the Friday Mass. I was invited to say one of the Prayers of the Faithful, which was an honour and a moment of deep connection for me in the presence of such a vibrant and faith-filled community.
Overall, Ignite was an amazing and life-changing experience. It helped me grow both personally and spiritually, deepening my understanding of my faith and encouraging me to continue pursuing a relationship with God. I know it also had a big impact on the others I attended with, and I feel incredibly grateful to have been part of something so meaningful.
We also invite all students in Years 7–12 to join us for our next Christian Youth Group Night on Friday, 1st August from 5:00–7:30pm, where we’ll enjoy hotdogs and a movie, along with time for fun and connection.
On Friday, 29th August, students in Years 7–12 are invited to take part in our Vinnies Winter Appeal Sleepout, raising awareness about homelessness in our local and national communities. Giving up one night of comfort helps us grow in empathy and deepen our understanding of what it means to love like Jesus.
Please join us in praying for and supporting our Year 12 students as they begin their Trial HSC Examinations in Weeks 3–4. Their calm focus, persistence and faith through pressure are inspiring to all of us.
From classroom conversations to youth ministry retreats, from liturgies to leadership, Term 3 is already shaping up to be filled with life, spirit and purpose.
Thank you to our staff, students, families and parish for continuing to build a faith-filled, hope-driven community with us. There’s something powerful happening here, and we are grateful to walk this journey with you.
With warm regards,
Mrs Wilsmore-Smith
Religious Education Coordinator

NAPLAN Results 2025
The Individual Student Results (ISR) for NAPLAN 2025 have now been issued to the school and parents/caregivers should have received these in the mail this week. If that is not the case, please contact the school office.
The National results from this year’s testing period will be released in August and will indicate the national standards in literacy and numeracy and provide nationally comparable data. This year’s Individual Student Reports (ISRs) have been reviewed by our staff during professional development sessions to evaluate the performance of students in Years 7 and 9. These results have provided staff with valuable, measurable data that will inform the ongoing development of teaching and learning at La Salle Academy.
The NAPLAN performance of our Year 7 cohort has indicated a range of strengths in a number of components, namely, Reading, Conventions of Language (Grammar and Punctuation and Spelling) and Numeracy. In these areas, at least 70% of students achieved a proficiency of either Exceeding or Strong. These results indicate the majority of students are either exceeding expectations or meeting challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
A comparison of Year 9 2025 results with their Year 7 performance in 2023 demonstrates significant growth across all components of NAPLAN, highlighting measurable progress in key literacy and numeracy skills. The strength of this cohort’s achievement is further highlighted by the fact their results were above the national average in most NAPLAN test domains. While at least 70% of students achieved a proficiency of either Exceeding or Strong in most of the literacy components, their greatest area of growth was in Writing, with an 18.5% increase in students achieving a proficiency of Exceeding.
Our staff will continue to utilise this information to develop data-informed teaching practices to ensure the continual improvement of academic outcomes for all students.
Diocesan Learning Hub
The Diocesan Learning Hub (DLH) is an initiative established by the Catholic Education Diocese Bathurst (CEDB) and provides access to Extension level courses for students who cannot access them within their own school. These courses include English Extension 2, Science Extension, History Extension and Mathematics Extension 2.
The DLH utilises a combination of group zoom sessions as well as one to one mentoring to deliver the curriculum, provide feedback and assess students. Students have access to highly trained expert teachers who teach students remotely, through an online learning platform, as well as in person during enrichment days and specialist workshops held throughout the year. Students are required to attend classes via Zoom each week as well as travel to attend the enrichment sessions. This learning model also builds student ownership and responsibility for learning as they engage critically with the material being learned both individually and in collaboration. It also provides challenges that require higher order thinking and the application of learning in a variety of settings which sets students up for tertiary education.
As preparations are commencing for the 2026 Diocesan Learning Hub, the CEDB are inviting prospective Year 12, 2026 students and their families to an information session via Zoom on Wednesday 20th August at 7pm. This will provide an opportunity to learn more about studying within the DLH and also find out more about submitting an expression of interest. Please see the flyer attached to access the Zoom link. If you have any questions, please contact the office.
Yours in learning,
Mrs Devine

Pastoral and Wellbeing Co-ordinator Year 7,9 and 11

It was a genuine pleasure to attend and be part of our recent Semester One Awards Assembly, where we recognised the outstanding achievements of students across all year levels. Celebrating the academic, sporting and personal successes of so many individuals was a wonderful reminder of the diverse talents and dedication present within our school. Congratulations to all award recipients—your efforts and commitment have not gone unnoticed. We also acknowledge the many students who have worked hard behind the scenes and encourage everyone to continue striving for their personal best in Semester Two.
Year 7
Our Year 7 students are now halfway through their first year of high school, and Semester Two presents the perfect opportunity to revisit their goals and set new ones. Whether it’s improving attendance, aiming for higher academic results, or increasing classroom effort, small consistent steps can make a big difference. We also encourage Year 7 students to make the most of the many opportunities offered at school—getting involved in fundraising events, extra-curricular activities, and lunchtime clubs are fantastic ways to build confidence, friendships, and a stronger connection to our school community.
Year 9
As I write this, Year 9 students are currently in Sydney on their Urban Challenge camp—working together in teams to navigate the city using clues and solving challenges along the way. This experience pushes students out of their comfort zones while developing vital skills like teamwork, communication, and resilience. We look forward to hearing the many stories and adventures they’ll return with, and the growth they’ll have experienced over the three-day challenge.
Year 11
For our Year 11 students, the focus now shifts to preparation for the Preliminary Examinations, which begin on Friday of Week 8. This is a crucial time to develop effective study habits that support both academic success and personal wellbeing. Prioritising good sleep, breaking revision into manageable sessions, and using active study strategies—such as summarising notes, creating flashcards, and teaching others—can significantly enhance understanding and retention. In addition, Year 11 leadership applications are now open. Students who are interested in applying for a leadership role in Year 12 are encouraged to see me to collect an application form. This is a fantastic opportunity to take on responsibility and have a meaningful impact on the school community.
Warm regards,
Mrs Tahni Hotham
Wellbeing Coordinator (Years 7, 9 & 11)

Premier’s Reading Challenge
A reminder that the PRC closing date has been extended until Friday, 19th September. All participants still have time to complete the challenge of reading twenty titles. Students are encouraged to keep up to date with entering their texts into their Personal Reading Logs to ensure they will get a certificate in Term 4.
A huge congratulations to Emily. H. (Yr 8) for having already completed the Challenge! This is the second year in a row that Emily has completed the Challenge well before the deadline. Well done, Emily! You have set the bar high and provided a great example to your peers.
Book Week 2025
Book Week is just around the corner, and we’re excited to celebrate with a range of fun activities that promote a love of reading across our school community! Throughout the week, students are encouraged to get involved in events such as the Staff Shelfie Guessing Competition, the Second Hand Book Drive, Book Emoji Competition, and introducing… Dress Like a Character Day. These activities are not only a great way to celebrate books and storytelling but also support a worthy cause.
This year, we are supporting Reading Out Of Poverty (ROOP). ROOP is an Australian non-profit organisation dedicated to improving literacy skills among disadvantaged children and families, particularly those from low-income, migrant, and refugee backgrounds. ROOP provides free books, early literacy programs, and support to ensure all children have the opportunity to develop strong reading and language skills. Their mission is to break the cycle of poverty through literacy, helping children succeed in education and beyond. All funds raised during Book Week will go to ROOP, helping to provide literacy support and resources to children in need. Let’s come together to share the joy of reading and make a difference! More information on Book Week will be communicated via Compass and our school assemblies.
HSC Trial Exams
As HSC Trial Exams approach, we encourage all Year 12 students to make the most of the library’s resources to support their preparation. The library offers a quiet and focused study environment, access to past papers, study guides, and syllabus-based texts to help consolidate your understanding across all subjects. Our staff are here to assist with research, referencing, and finding the right resources to strengthen your revision. Make the library part of your study routine and give yourself the best chance of success in the lead-up to your trials.
Overdue Books
A friendly reminder to please return any overdue library books as soon as possible. Returning your books on time helps others enjoy them too and keeps our library running smoothly. If you’re unsure whether you have overdue items, drop by the library—we’re happy to check for you!
Overdue notices will be distributed in Admin classes in Week 3.
Happy Reading,
Mrs Devine

Maths Escape Room
On 4th July, 20 of our Year 7 students travelled to Mudgee for an exciting and challenging Maths Escape Room experience hosted by St Matthews Catholic School. But this wasn’t just any excursion—our students stepped up as leaders, each guiding a team of Year 6 students through a series of clever mathematical puzzles and critical thinking challenges.
Throughout the session, La Salle students demonstrated fantastic leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as they supported their teams to work against the clock and "escape the room" by solving maths-based tasks. The atmosphere was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and lots of brainpower!
We’re so proud of our Year 7s for being such positive role models and for representing La Salle with pride and maturity. Thank you to St Matthews for hosting such a fun and inspiring day!

All Things Attendance
It is law in NSW that all school age children must attend school every day that the school is open.
There is a direct relationship between learning success and excellent attendance.
CONGRATULATIONS – 100% ATTENDANCE
As we come to the end of Term 2, and the first Semester of the year we would like to congratulate 9
students who achieved 100% attendance. We also had 111 students achieve 90% and above
attendance for the Semester. This is amazing and we thank the students and parents for placing an
importance on being at school on time and attending every day.
So, as we move forward into Term 3 and the start of Semester 2, what does regular attendance at
school look like to you as a parent and also your child? What can you do to help ensure your child is
attending school regularly?
At the start of Term 3 letters were sent out to Parent/Guardians letting them know if there was a
concern with their child’s attendance at La Salle. Did you receive one of these letters and seeing the
actual numbers in front of you in black and white did it highlight how much school your child is missing.
To achieve the expected 90% and above this equates to only 5 days per term of not attending school
and a total of 20 days for the whole year. Has your child already had this many days or are they close?
If this continues you will be asked to attend the school for an Attendance Improvement Planning
Meeting.
Sometimes parents don’t realise how much school their child is missing and by sending these letters we
hope that you have a conversation with your child and find out why so much school has been missed.
If you are experiencing difficulties getting your child to school, we are here to help. Please contact your
child’s Pastoral Care Coordinator and they will be only too happy to help.
La Salle recognises and values the benefits of a positive home/school relationship and seeks to involve
parents in developing positive patterns of attendance and meeting the expected 90% or above school
attendance rate for all students. We hope you can support La Salle as we move forward and encourage
regular school attendance for your child.
